Mechanical Ventilation Systems With Heat Recovery (MVHR)

Mechanical Ventilation With Heat Recovery (MVHR)

Mechanical Ventilation with Heat Recovery is an energy efficient ventilation and heating solution suitable for both new and retrofit properties (addition of new technology or features to older systems).

MVHR systems perform three main functions. It supply’s fresh filtered air to the living areas such as bedrooms, dining rooms, living rooms etc. while also extracting the humid, stale from wet room such as the kitchen, utility and bathrooms. Before exhausting this stale air, it extracts the heat from it. After all you have already spent money heating it. This heat is then transferred to the fresh air and distributed throughout the house.

Benefits Of MVHR Systems Ensure excellent indoor air quality

  • Protects against mould & condensation issues within the property
  • Recovers up to 98% of heat typically lost with passive systems
  • Clinically proven to help sufferers of asthma and other respiratory problems
  • No trickle vents or bathroom fans required.
  • Allow occupant to ventilate property securely without having to open doors or windows.
  • Quiet and draught free
  • Removes unwanted cooking smells and other odours.
  • Helps prevent build-up of potentially lethal radon gas
  • MVHR systems are environmentally friendly and are a recommended in Part F of Irish TGD.

Features To Look For In MVHR Systems

The standard of modern MVHR system is extremely high. The features of the high performing MVHR systems recommended  include;

  • Greater than 90% efficiency
  • High Efficiency EC Fans
  • Counter Flow Polystyrene Heat Exchangers
  • Automatic Summer Bypass
  • Built in Humidity Detection
  • Frost Protection
  • Digital Controller
  • Extended Warranty

Introducing Demand Controlled Ventilation

Demand Controlled Ventilation is a controlled method of ventilating your home that links the amount of fresh air supplied to the occupancy of the home. DCV systems continuously monitor indoor air quality measuring parameters such humidity (H2O), carbon dioxide (CO2) and Volatile Organic Compounds (VOCs) which are harmful to our health. As these levels fluctuate daily so too does the DCV system ensuring that the flow rates are sufficient when levels are high. The system runs in trickle mode when air quality is good. This ensures optimum ventilation throughout the home using the minimum energy to do so.

Fitting A DCV System

A demand controlled fan unit is installed in the attic/ utility or plant room. A separate duct is installed from the fan unit to the wet rooms such as the kitchen, utility, bathrooms & WCs. Sensors, fitted inline in the duct, or in the room, depending on the brand used, measure air quality in each area. Based on these readings, humid or stale air is extracted from the wet areas and fresh air is drawn into to the house through wall or window vents strategically positioned in each habitable area such as bedrooms, living rooms etc.

Benefits Of DCV

  • DCV systems are demand controlled meaning each room is ventilated at the optimum level.
  • DCV systems are significantly more cost effective to run versus other ventilation systems using as little as .2 to .5 w/l/s. This translates to running costs of less than €50 p/year.
  • DCV systems are automatic and as such demand no user interaction Ensures no mould/ condensation issues throughout the property.
  • DCV systems are suitable for new and existing buildings.
  • DCV systems are very quiet when operating, running at approx. 25-30db.
  • DCV systems do not require filters.
  • DCV systems ensure optimal security as occupants do not need to open windows for ventilation purposes.

Multiple System air conditioners available

All split systems are quieter, more powerful and energy efficient than window/wall and portable air conditioners. Many split system air conditioners also come with handy built in features such as motion sensors, Wi-Fi and air purifiers or ionisers.

Single vs multi split system air conditioning

Both single and multi split system air conditioners have inside and outside units. A single split system air conditioner has one inside unit, whereas a multi split system can have multiple indoor units all connected to the one outdoor unit. Both single and multi split units are available as heating and cooling, or cooling only air outlet models.

A multi split system generally allows you to have up to five or more separate indoor units for different rooms in your house. The outdoor unit can be wall mounted if you live in a unit or have a multistorey house. Multi split systems are well suited for both residential and commercial use.

Multi split system air conditioning vs ducted air conditioning

If you need air conditioning in more than one room or area of your home but don’t have room to install ducted air conditioning then a multi split system is a great alternative.

Flexibility and convenience

Multi split system air conditioners offer unreal flexibility and convenience allowing you to choose the right indoor unit for each room of your house. You can install a high capacity air conditioner for larger living rooms and smaller, quieter ones for the bedrooms, all powered by the one outside unit. This allows you to control the temperature and environment in your home on room by room basis.

Being able to individually adjust the temperatures in each room you’ll save money and have maximum comfort by heating or cooling individual rooms. You can have up to five separate indoor air outlets all powered by a single outside compressor.

Energy efficiency

Energy saving settings combined with the ability to heat or cool individual rooms helps to reduce power and running costs. Choosing the right indoor air outlet unit to suit each room also ensures that you’re not wasting power. The wrong unit in a room can result in the air not being cooled properly and energy being wasted. A unit that’s too big for a smaller room also uses more power every time you turn it on compared to a smaller unit running for a longer period of time.

By operating multiple indoor air conditioners from the one external air compressor, multi split system air conditioners are among the most energy efficient of all air conditioners. Choose the most energy efficient inside air outlet units for maximum savings on your bill.

Installing a multi split system air conditioner

A multi split system air conditioner needs to be Due to the ozone depleting refrigerant gas used in air multi split system air and other air conditioners need to be professionally installed. Call Driver Renewables to supply and install your air conditioning unit Call 0876396593

Pros of a multi split system air conditioner

There are many great reasons to consider a multi split air conditioner to keep your home cool in summer and warm in winter. These include:

  • energy efficiency
  • multiple indoor air outlets powered by the one outside compressor unit
  • ability to choose the most suitable and energy efficient air outlet unit on a room by room basis
  • adjusting temperatures to suit each room
  • more affordable to purchase and install compared to ducted air conditioning
  • you can add in extra air outlets later on down the track if needed
  • affordable maintenance, service, repairs and replacement of units.

Cons of a multi split system air conditioner

If you’re considering installing multi split system air condition you should also take the following into consideration:

  • Outdoor air unit need to be placed as close as possible to the indoor air outlet.

Multisplit system has a structure similar to the splits, with the difference that a single outdoor unit is connected to several indoor units that can be placed in different rooms. The work of this type of air conditioner can be controlled by pilots – each internal part of the evaporator has a separate remote control. Multisplit’s biggest advantage is, that only one unit is required to support multiple indoor units.

Exhaust Hot Water Heat Pumps

Exhaust Air Heat Pumps

The benefits of exhaust air heat pump are numerous?

Buildings must be ventilated

  • An all-in-one units – Heat-recovery ventilation, Heating & Hot water.
  • Ideal for smaller new homes or Passive House that will be at a high level of air-tightness and low heat loss
  • Usually less cost than buying separate traditional solutions and a stand-alone heat recovery unit.
  • Good solution for multiple small dwellings such as apartments, more cost effective than district heating, more environmentally friendly than multiple gas boilers etc
  • We have a choice of different models to suit different requirements
  • Connects easily to Solar Thermal – in fact the on-board controls of all our heat pumps can control solar thermal systems.
  • Works well with a room sealed stove (separate air supply for combustion)
  • Possible to dock with a Nibe EAHP with a gas boiler as back up for extreme weather

If the building will be more than 150SQ M, or has a total heat loss of more than 2-3 kW then consider one of our ground source or air to water units with an integral ventilation module .

For air-tight, low energy builds, where ventilation is a must, choose an Exhaust Air Heat-Pump. This will re-cycle the heat from your house’s ventilation system. These machines are ideal for apartments and more compact air-tight low energy or passive homes. Air is drawn through ducts to the heat pump from the bathrooms, utility and kitchen areas. The cold waste air is discharged to outside through another duct, and condensation to a drain.
Not only that, the additional heat generated internally from lighting,
people and domestic appliances is also used through heat recovery.
